Working with glass blocks. Waited a long time for cleaning mortor. Tips for cleaning?

I put a small 16 "x32" window glass block in my bathroom. This is the first time I worked with glass blocks and I'm afraid I've waited a long time for my final cleaning of mortar. It's hard as a rock and I'm not bad on the front glass. The sponge is being crushed by mortar. Is there anything I can do to clean the mortar and do so only between the grout lines? Or will I have to remove the glass again and chalk a room for learning? Thanks HUM! I found that scratching with a flat head screw driver is what allows me to reducing grout lines and get pieces, leaving much less for cleaning. Thanks for the advice guys (and gal!) More Details. The flathead screwdriver worked very well. The grout sponge was worthless, but then I started to use a green carpet cleaner I use to clean dishes and worked very well. Everything is clean now. Thanks to all for your advice.
