At what age rocks are exposed along I-270 in west St. Louis County near Fenton, where the road cuts through the mountains?
These layered rocks are clearly distinct. I have read that some people have found fossils of the commands. Is this true?
I think most contemporary Saint Louis Mississippi 362-320 million years. The rock is composed mainly of sedimentary deposits region with a large inland sea in the super continent Pangea.Mississippian Period (362 a rock 320 million years old) After a brief setback, Kaskaskia sea returned to Missouri in early Mississippi. The Kaskaskia never fell into the Illinois Basin, in the vicinity. Despite the floods did not start with a core of silica, this layer is only expressed in stone sandstone and shale in the northeast and southwest of the state. All as the Ordovician, Mississippian sequence consists of 4 series: the Kinderhookian, Osage, Meramecian and Chesterian. Contrary to the Ordovician rock layers are very different, depending on the state sector. About a quarter of all the rocks that crop up in Missouri are old Mississippi. Most strata of Mississippi are crystalline, fossiliferous micritic or (mud) of limestone, intercalated with thin shales. The sea began Mississippi as a clear, warm sea and the shallow reefs with carbonate profuse. As the period of time, the sea became increasingly muddy after northeast of Acadian orogeny. Mississippi Sea may have covered most of Missouri, though, as usual, in the shell thin-elevation areas and was subsequently withdrawn. Perhaps more typical is the Mississippi Burlington limestone strata. This crystalline, highly fossiliferous limestone covers most state and extends into Iowa and Arkansas. Typical features include layers of flint nodules and sedimentary structure resulting solution called Stylolites pressure. Spaces in the Stylolites may also collect flint or quartz. In Mississippi, the crinoids were king. These echinoderms are similar to plants, with a calyx (head) and a spike-like roots. The common name of crinoids is "sea lilies" but are actually animals. After death, the "mother" is divided into several tens to several hundreds of fragments, which are one of the most common fossil Mississippi. Above Burlington, Keokuk limestone is known worldwide for "pockets". A geode is a round stone hollow, usually filled with crystals. Sedimentary Geodes form when mineral water is trapped in the lime mud, or when migrating more mineralized water afternoon in the open spaces in the limestone. A crack for fluid inside and is indispensable. The walls of the space covered (more or less), usually calcite or quartz. Once the walls are stabilized, the crystallization of the product, the size of the crystal growth limited by space and fluid mineralization. Finally, the pocket is the abbreviation for the crystallization of materials, dry pocket, or the space is completely filled with minerals. Once exposed to the surface, geodes, which are generally round or ovoid and less sensitive to disturbance of the surrounding rock, separated from the limestone. Whack a hammer blow is all it takes to transfer a handful crystals. At the end of Mississippi, the sea was receding Kaskaskia sequences overwhelmed with mud-rich carbonate and silica sand. What carbonates are exposed once karstification worked on his state of aging on the surface of newly formed land.
