Should I try being a waitress/server?
I’m a hostess at a very nice locally owned restaraunt. I make 8.50 an hour, and quite frankly it’s not enough for me to get my own place, which I so badly want to do. I know the menu, and I know all the rules, expectations, and all that jazz. My mother is the front of house manager there, and she’s going to start training me as a server. But, my mom has no faith in me(she won’t admit it, but I know she thinks I’m an idiot because I’m shy and awkward, in all actuality, I’m not an idiot and I know what’s going on.) The things I am most concerned about are handling 3-4 tables at once and balancing plates on my arms. The entrees range from about 16-23 dollars, and the sandwiches, appetizers, quesadillas, and pizzas range from 9-15 dollars, served all day. Will I make more money serving, and what are some tips on how to be a good server?
Well if she is training you as a server, chances are she is going to put you on the floor as a server.
Knowing the menu and using the computer to put in orders are probably a couple of the hardest parts of being a server, and it sounds like you have probably mastered that.
Aside from that, you’ll find that waiting tables has a flow for each table that you follow repeatedly: greeting, drinks, appetizers, entries, payment. After you have been trained, you’ll probably start with two or three tables and go up to four in a couple shifts. After a few months, you’ll get better at balancing your tables and it will get easier. So will the tray thing. Start out with small trays while you are training, carry them for the person training you! It’ll get easier from there.
My best tip: smile no matter what. because once you leave for the night, chances are it doesn’t matter anymore. You will make A LOT more money serving than you will hosting. Also the more you suggest dishes and up-sell items (“would you like chicken on your ceasar salad?”) the more money you will make from tips.
you’ll be fine. congrats!
